James Gross, Director of Orchestras
James Gross is in his 20th year of teaching in the Grosse Pointe Public Schools and in his 18th year as Director of Orchestras at Grosse Pointe South High School. Under his direction, both the South High School and Pierce Middle School Orchestra students have consistently earned First Division ratings at MSBOA Band & Orchestra Festival. Mr. Gross has been the recipient of the MSBOA District XVI Orchestra Teacher of the Year. In Grosse Pointe, he has also directed the Elementary and Middle School Honors Orchestras, Summer Music Festival Orchestras, and Fiddlepointe, a student and community string band. Mr. Gross has served on the viola faculties of All- State at Interlochen, the American String Workshop at the University of Michigan, and MASTA Junior High String Camp. A graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy, Mr. Gross earned a double Bachelor's degree in Music Education and Viola Performance from the University of Michigan and a Master’s degree in Orchestral Conducting from Wayne State University. Mr. Gross resides in Grosse Pointe Park with his wife Carolyn and their three children: Eliana, Danny, and Nolan.
